Shoot that poison arrow

Had a fun Sunday today. I may have told some of you that last Autumn I took up archery as a hobby. We did a taster course and rather enjoyed it and went out and bought a starter kit of bow/arrows etc.

We had a break over winter and then started again a few months ago. It's a great way to spend a Saturday morning in the fresh air. Neither of us are brilliant, but I have worked my way up to 60 yards now, which doesn't sound too hard until you've tried it!

Well - today was our first proper competition. It was organised by another local club and was aimed at beginners so it was a little less competitive than regular tournaments.

archery targets

And it was great fun. Had a great time flinging pointy sticks at a small target at the other end of a field :-) The weather was glorious and despite the suntan lotion, umbrellas and hats I still got a little sunburnt on the back of my neck. We took a nice picnic for the lunch break... finally getting the chance to use a picnic rucksack/coolbag thing a friend bought us last year.

I didn't win anything but was pretty pleased with the way I shot, considering I hadn't had too much practice at the distance I was at (it was a handicap shoot, so they recommend you go further than you are used to.. apparently). Didn't disgrace myself though.

I may not have won at the archery, but I did win a bottle of whisky in the raffle.

Which was nice.

I've always wanted to try archery -Orlando Bloom and all that. Me and the missus did try fencing for a while which I felt was equally swashbuckling, But the problem is, everyone seemed to have longer arms. It was like everyone had these epes - or whatever they were called - but I was kitted out with a pencil.

Glad you enjoyed yourself Joanne, I've done archery twice once when I was 11 when I didn't have the strength in my arms and the other time when I was 32 when I have to admit stronger but couldn't take it seriously cos I felt like an extra out of Robin Hood, that and the fact I kept twanging my chest.

Sorry for lowering the tone but there you are!

Wyndham - check out a local club like I did. They're bound to have a taster day.

Jane - chest twanging is a hazard I agree, even for blokes. You can get chest guards that protect the.. erm... sensitive areas :-)

My mum was dead good at archery, she even won trophies...Apparently only being able to see out of one eye (which came as a complete shock to me!!!) is a huge advantage...in archery it is anyway, I think in all other areas (apart from impersonating a pirate...) it's a bit of a pisser ;-)

It reminds me of a story.

Many years ago I was part of a Wars of the Roses re-enactment society.

And there was this guy called Mattkin, who at one time was the fool of the company, until I defeated him in combat with a wet Haddock.

    Anywho....

I should point out that we fired arrows with rubber bungs on the end, but they still hurt, especially if fired from a 100lb longbow.

Mattkin was part of a group storming a castle. And because it was a hot day, he stopped to mop his brow. And as he lifted the visor on his helmet he was hit square in the forehead by one of these arrows.

He had 'Made in England' printed backwards on his forehead for the rest of the weekend.

I've played around with a recurve bow a couple of times. It was quite fun, though I admit that I was barely strong enough and the twang was a tad annoying.

Geena Davis, the American actress, is a keen archer and a good one - she just missed the cut for the US Olympic team last time round. Just thought you may like to know that.

I've tried archery a few times (I even joined the archery sports club at uni but drifted away as is the nature of these things) but although I enjoy it, unfortunately I am about as good at it as I am at every other sport - crap!

PS: Does cycling count as a sport or as exercise?

/me ducks just in case Miss Handbag reads this blog :)

    Joanna,
I've been an archery addict for the last 30 years and am psyched to hear of a new-comer who had a great experiene! I love the art and culture of the sport. I'm currently shooting a left handed recurve, right handed as I started using a Turkish thumbring last spring. It's been a blast learning to shoot from the other side of the bow! I just came inside from bowhunting white-tail deer in Massachusetts and shot a FITA round a few weeks ago, so there's a huge range of cool archery to do.
This is the first 'blog' I've ever been to. I figured I'd find out what they are, so I did a google search for 'archery blog' and your blog came up. So here I am. Now I'll go check out your main page and see what other blogs are out there!
Keep having fun and keep shooting!
    Jason
