You can't beat a good Mythos gag. (Ia!)

Personally, I'm rather enjoying the Deep Ones gag.

Bea has asked me to point out that there is a grammatical mistake in the slogan.

    Standards must be maintained.

Ah, good old H.P. Lovecraft! I'm currently revisiting a rather hefty volume of short stories of his, and would have to say he's simultaneously one of the most exhilarating and exasperating writers I've ever encountered. On the plus side, he has the most astonishing way with words (his stories are certainly guaranteed to expand your vocabulary if nothing else), as well as an equally amazing ability to create the most evocative scenes; on the negative side, he seems to regard full stops almost as a necessary evil. (Many has been the time when I've really had to stop myself hurling the book across the room when I've found myself coming across yet another sentence that just goes on and on and on.) And then there's the way my brain seems to just freeze when I come across gems like this: "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgahnagl fhtagn." (OK, that one was penned by his "successor", August Derleth, but the two authors seem to have very similar styles.) I mean, what the fuck?! I find myself reading lines like that over and over, letter by letter, pretty much, just trying to work out how the hell you pronounce a stream of mumbo jumbo like that!

One of my favourite passages from Lovecraft, though, would have to be this one from his short story "The Quest of Iranon":
"And the King bade him put away his tattered purple, and clothed him in satin and cloth-of-gold, with rings of green jade and bracelets of tinted ivory, and lodged him in a gilded and tapestried chamber on a bed of sweet carven wood with canopies and coverlets of flower-embroidered silk." As a transvestite, all I can say is that's my idea of heaven, baby!
