Trick Cyclist
I'm still here.. just been busy. I just hadn't had that much to write. But this story on the BBC website prompted me to express my concern.
On first read the "Man has sex with Bike" story raises a bit of a giggle. It's a "laugh at the weirdo" kind of story. Maybe you wonder if he now has an exclusion order banning him from branches of Halfords
But then you read it a little closer and it's very unsettling. But not at the sex act itself, but the circumstances that lead to his prosecution and being placed on the sex offenders register.
This guy was in his hotel room. On his own. The bike is an inanimate object so there is no issue of consent. He wasn't doing this in a public place.
In essence, he was having a wank in a hotel room. In private. On his own.
The Maid then unlocked the door using a key, saw him in mid-act and complained. And for that he ended up on the sex offenders register. I think this is all rather extreme.
If she had walked in on a woman using a vibrator, would she have complained? If the man had been using a sex doll would she had complained? And here's the tranny angle - what if he had been dressed in stockings and suspenders?
I don't remember there being any actual law about being an offense to have sex with a bicycle. (although I do still wonder how he was actually doing it - did he take the saddle off?)
The more I think about this the more amazed I am that this case should have ever come to court. Surely maids in hotels are often accidentally coming into rooms and finding people have a quickie? I just find it hard to believe that someone can be placed on the sex offenders register for doing something on your own with an inanimate object with the door locked.
It's just crazy.

I agree, its a crazy old world - where does it stop?
Or is it not so much a crazy world as a crazy country? Nanny Britain deciding whats good for you? Maybe I have winter blues, but other parts of Europe where they are more relaxed about life seem appealing.
The sex-with-a-bike morality is crazy - as you say, its behind closed doors in a hotel room - since when did the state have jurisdiction over sex toys?

Yes, when I read it I couldn't help wondering whether there was something missing in the story. The only reason I can think of for him being placed on the Sex Offenders Register is that the prosecution argued that he was deliberately exposing himself to the maid while masturbating. But that is surely ruled out by the fact that the maid had to unlock the door to discover him.
As you say, it's crazy.

I am sure that European law has something to say about this. After all it would appear that this poor unfortunate man was in his what is effectively his home. It would appear that he was in some way coersed to admit the offence since he initially denied the offence and the reported facts alone do not justify a secure conviction.

Yes I agree it does seem wrong, but I couldn't help laughing, as it reminded me of Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Policeman, which includes a theory of the transfer of atoms between a man and his bicycle:
"The gross and net result of it is that people who spend most of their natural lives riding iron bicycles over the rocky roadsteads of this parish get their personalities mixed up with the personalities of their bicycle as a result of the interchanging of the atoms of each of them and you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who nearly are half people and half bicycles."
which might explain a lot.

The guilty party is whoever decided to prosecute. He pleaded guilty to breach of the peace - a charge which would never have stuck had he defended it.
Now that he is - in the eyes of the law - guilty then the judge simply has to decide "was sex a part of the crime" clearly it was so he goes on the sex offenders register. The judge had no choice here.
The law is indeed an ass. I'd rather see the maids reprimanded.
