Pointy Ear Wearers

an analogy...

I am a science fiction fan. I'm out to my wife and a few of my friends know i like to occasionally read science fiction

Sometimes I go to a club where others who read science fiction also gather, and we read books and maybe even watch the odd sci-fi movie. But it's OK. I don't do it that often. Maybe a few times a month. I keep my stash of books under my bed.

But there's this other group. They like to dress up like characters from Star Trek and stuff like that. They parade about in public in alien suits. These are the "pointy ear wearers". They're not really part of the Sci-Fi community. I get embarrased because my family and friends think they are like me. That they will think they represent what I am. I think most of these pointy ear wearers only do it for the kicks. They're not proper scifi fans like me. I cringe when I see them parading at the latest comic con.

Bloody PEW's.. they bring the whole community down.

((please note - this is not real.. I actually quite like PEW's. I'm just venting my frustration at some of the forum posts recently that seem to make out that the whole TG community would be fine, if it wasn't for us trannies messing things up for everyone else....)

I twigged as I was reading it, but when I saw the title in my feed, my first thought was, "Does she mean elf wannabes, or Vulcan wannabes?" :)

Trannies - We're the "meddling kids" of the real world!

Don't worry about the forums, people will always blame others for their problems. Not that you need me to tell you that...

I don't bother reading forum's anymore as they just decend into flame wars as soon as someone disgrees with someone else.

Dont let it get you down Jo. It could be worse, you could be accused of being a trainspotter like I often am. :o)

How did you go about telling your wife and family about your science fiction urges? I have been reading science fiction in secret for some years now.

Last week, I found that I had accidentally left a copy of Iain M Banks' 'Excession' in our marital bed, while the wife was away on a business trip. I think my subconscious is trying to out me.

I don't think I could ever actually wear pointy ears in public, but I have spent a lot of time browsing websites that advertise them. Some of the most realistic latex ones cost a fortune, don't they?

Gah! If there's one thing I hate more than PEWs, it's meddling kids! Do you know how many brilliant criminal schemes* I would've gotten away with if it hadn't been for a bunch of meddling kids?!

*All of which, IIRC, seemed to involve me running around masquerading as some ridiculous monster to "scare people away".

    Hello,
My name is Amos and I am working for LinkLift - a company that deals with online advertising, principally buying and selling text links.
I noticed your site which I think is very nice and I was wondering if you would like to include some links, simply one or two small words in your side bar, in exchange of a fixed monthly income.
Thanks for your attention, I am looking forward to hearing from you should you need more clarifications.
    Sincerely,
    Amos Singarella

I wonder if Amos sells pointy ears? I'm all out.

BTW, out of curosity, which is less geeky: wanting to be an elf or a Vulcan? :-D

Mind you, it starts with sci-fi and before you know it, it'll be urban fantasy and alternative history books.... or so I hear :)

^Oh Lynn, desist with your fear-mongering! I've been dabbling in sci-fi for years, and it's never progressed to anything harder for me. It's just something I like to unwind with every now and again, at the end of a hard day's work. I'm not hurting anyone with it; I've got it all under control. GODDAMNIT, I CAN STOP ANYTIME I LIKE! [Starts scratching at skin uncontrollably, and casting nervous glances out the window, sure that that nice little old lady wandering past at that moment is really some hideous alien from the planet Blugzah in human form.] Now look what you've done, getting me all upset like that! I'll need to indulge in some sweet, soothing sci-fi to settle my nerves and restore my mental equilibrium! Goddamnit, there's got to be a Doctor Who novel I haven't read yet lying around here somewhere...

I'm only slightly disappointed that noone considered that the pointy ears might be demonic, oh well, you humans are strange anyway so I shouldn't be all that shocked. Awesome post btw, it's the cleverness like that which gives me a small bit for hope for humanity :)
